Dublin Christmas Markets

And that’s it again!

The Christmas Period 2017 is over, all Christmas markets are wrapped up and it is time to do a quick review and then to put the site again in slumber mode until October of November 2017.

This Christmas Period the www.DublinChristmasMarkets.com site was visited 35,000 times between mid November and 25 December, which is an increase of nearly 80% in comparison to last year. Thanks for your trust and support again.

It was not a great year as far as Christmas Markets are concerned, though. Markets were shorter and there were less than in previous years and we still had nearly exclusively Christmas-themed markets instead of Christmas Markets.

For years I am saying that the ONLY way Dublin will ever have a successful Christmas Market is if Dublin City will take ownership of it in the same way as nearly ALL Christmas Markets in Europe are operated. Dublin City, unfortunately is not keen at all to get involved and would prefer if a private operator was in charge. The problem in this case is that the private operator has a revenue goal that doesn’t consider the overriding driver in other European countries, which is to attract people/visitors/buyers into the cities.

Yes, there are lots of other issues in Dublin. For example the lack of a central place/square. A certain narrowmindedness of traders in Dublin City when it comes to the perceived competition of a Christmas Market and the inability of Dublintown to run a market that will attract visitors (They tried a few years ago and failed badly.)

But all in all it comes back to the first point: Dublin City has to take ownership IF a successful market is wanted for Dublin.

2018 will be another chance, let’s see if anything changes!?

But even if nothing will change, this website will be back towards the end of 2018 to tell you about the markets that take place over the Christmas Period and I am hopeful that one year, we will have a great Christmas Market! :-)

Have a great 2018!

Christmas 2017 is near! An update!

And here we are again. Christmas 2017 is just a stone throw away and the DublinChristmasMarkets.com website is updated again.

As always there are changes and unfortunately no big improvement from last year. Dublin is still incapable to deliver what Belfast does very well and even Waterford does a much better job. Dublin City decided this year to get somehow involved with the Dublin Flea Christmas Market at the Point Village, but that is NOT a Christmas Market in the way you would expect. It is lots of stalls in a big office building. The other “office building Christmas Market” at Block B in Smithfield is not happening this year, instead there will be a one-weekend market at New Market Square in the Food Co-op and the Green Door Market.

The other big question every year is then “Will there be a Christmas Market at the CHQ?” and the answer is Yes and No. Remember the “I Believe Christmas Market” from two years ago, the market that proudly announced that it will be one of the top European Christmas Markets within 5 years? It never came back after the first year. This year an new attempt is made, but it is going for a completely different market:

On the George’s Dock platform an “Après Lodge” will await all fans of Christmas Parties and with it Après Dublin have also added a few market stalls next to the CHQ building. The information is still a little sparse, but I hear that there will be around 15 stalls. The opening times of the stalls are 12:00-17:00 on 30 Nov-03 Dec and then from 07-23 Dec. The other component is the Party aspect with room for 1500 people (surprising that so many are allowed on the platform considering the restrictions for the Oktoberfest!) and live band and DJ. Admission charges to the “Lodge” part are 16.29 per person or 318.39 for a table of 10. One food and drink voucher per person is included.

I will check out the Christmas Market part soon and will update this post when I have done so, but the focus of this event is clearly elsewhere, so I don’t expect something amazing.

In general, I keep calling the markets in Dublin around this time of the year: “Markets with a Christmas Theme”, instead of “Christmas Markets” and I don’t think I am unfair. :-)

And it’s a wrap!

That’s it for 2016! All Christmas Markets are closed now and this site will go into slumber mode until October or November of 2017. Approx. 20,000 visitors visited the site over the last four weeks and they came back often, because the number of visits is significantly higher. In addition, the close relationship with the Dublin Event Guide (for Free Events) means that the 24,000 Dublin Event Guide subscribers and 68,000 Facebook Followers were all the time fully informed about what was going with regards to Christmas markets.

2016 has been good for Christmas-themed markets but bad for Christmas Markets. Let’s hope that 2017 will be better and that we will have a proper Christmas Market for next Christmas.

(If you want to run a market and you need advise, let us know via dublineventguide@gmail.com and we will see if we can help!)

Thanks for visiting this site and see you in a few months again! ;-)

Main changes in comparison to 2015

It is normal that the markets change from year to year, there are some new ones and some previous ones weren’t successful enough or will not be continued for other reasons. Here is a summary of how 2016 looks like.

  • Two years ago Dublintown ran a Christmas market along Stephen’s Green. They said it was a success, the market traders and visitors didn’t agree however. Last year and this year, that side of St. Stephen’s Green is not accessible because of the LUAS work, so the market couldn’t continue even if it had been a success. But you could say, it was not very smart to run it at that location if it could only run for one year.
In 2016 there will be NO Christmas Market at St. Stephen’s Green!
  • Until two years ago there was a market in a straight line down Dame Court, but in 2016 there will be NO Christmas Market in Dame Court!
  • When the first Christmas Market came to Ireland about 8-10 years ago it was organised by a German company that was brought in by the Dublin Docklands Authority. It worked for a few years in a somewhat difficult location, but then some Irish company had the genial idea that they could do it better … and failed.
After no market at George’s Dock in 2014, the “I believe in Christmas” market promised to be different and to be amazing and be the best thing since sliced pan. But visitors weren’t convinced and in 2016 there will be NO Christmas Market at George’s Dock. The “I believe in Christmas” market didn’t survive the first year.
  • There will be a market IN the CHQ Building this year, but it will be relatively small. It will run from 08-23 Dec every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but with opening hours of 11:00-16:00, it is anything but a proper Christmas market.
  • It is shocking, but that means that there will be NO outdoor Christmas Market in Dublin in 2016.
  • There will be a number of stalls in Dun Laoghaire stretched along the “Metals” and near the LexiCon, but by being stretched out like that, it most likely won’t have the Christmas Market atmosphere you would wish for.
  • The nearest proper-size Traditional/Continental-type Christmas Market to Dublin is in ……Belfast. :-O

Dublin Christmas Markets website online for 2016

Two or three weekend markets have already happened because they couldn’t wait! ;-) But now the website is online and updated again and will be kept up-to-date until after Christmas.

It is the third year now for this website and it is the ONLY comprehensive listing of all Christmas Markets in Dublin. Spread the word so that all your friends benefit from that information as well.
